It is a mystery that has you reading as fast as you can to find out what is at the next turn. It is a lesson in both good and evil and how the powers thereof are in each of us. There are nuggets of wisdom/lessons in it that make you look at your own life. It combines the real world with the supernatural world. There is no way I can wait for the next book without reading this a few times more. I would HIGHLY recommend this book, especially to bookclubs because there is so much to talk about. . . Truly a delightful adventure read. The book is captivating from the start to finish. You immediately get caught up in the adventure of life changing events of the main character through new relationships she creates, her self-discovery, and courage.

Rowena Portch’s fantasy novel, The Protected, Book 1 in the Spirian Series was a pleasant surprise. Her imagination, writing skills and willingness to weave portions of her own life experiences into this exciting fictional tale brought it to life.

Main character, Skye Taylor, like the author, is a blind Massage Therapist in her 40’s who lives in the state of Washington.

Though blind, Skye has great gifts that make her the object of powerful good and evil clans of the Spirian race–not quite human and not fully spiritual beings who have super powers, live long virile lives and appear to be much younger than they are.

Mysterious Doctor Khalen Dunning, his powerful father figure, Case and Case’s father Shanuk, are leaders of the Protector clan while Khalen’s twin brother, Traeger and their biological father Damon, are the leaders of the evil Shadow clan. Both groups believe that Skye is the foretold legendary gifted woman who can tip the balance of powers and their clan’s future through her offspring. Each clan wants their twin member to mate with Skye.

A Skeptic at the onset, Rowena quickly grabbed and held my interest and left me looking forward to reading her next exciting book in this series.

Thank you very much to the author for allowing me to read this wonderful story! I thoroughly enjoyed the characters and plot, and the fact that this is a spiritual journey for the protagonist, Skye. The fight between good and evil always makes for an interesting story and this is certainly no exception. The war amongst the members of the Spirian race raises important questions: both spiritually and morally, which I will let you sort through on your own. I loved the connection Skye feels to Khalen…and the protectiveness and connection he feels towards her. And how could you not love her guide dog, Maiyun, who so fiercely watches over her? I cannot wait to read the next book in the series, Union.

I have read all in this series and could not put any of them down even to eat a meal. I found I could not wait for the next story and none of them ever became ho hum. The fourth one I cried at the end. I do wonder if there really are gifted individuals out there with these gifts and these stories make it seem possible. The author’s style draws the reader immediately in and leaves one content and wanting more. This is a series for those who have outgrown the Twilight books. Rowena Portch has delivered a wonderful adventure that also takes place in the Pacific Northwest, with descriptions that make you feel as if you are there with her characters. Skye is a fascinating heroine who will surprise you, not only because of her unusual powers but because she seems so real. Make sure you have a few hours carved out of your day because you won’t want to put this book down.

My first time seeing this book was at Abel Wellness Center in Union, Wa
I was there for a massage appointment… Nervous, I scanned the room and saw this book
The Protected, thought ” hmmm interesting, I’ll take a look”
I was NOT dissapointed, I was captivated from the start.
This is wonderfully written.
You have the desire to find out more of what’s going to happen
I honestly could not wait until my appointment was over, get home and finish.
Read this in two days, still have it and go back from time to time…
I could not wait until the next book was out, scooped it up as soon as it was…
I’ve recommended and have bought this book for a gift…
